Once upon a time...
In April 1999 I joined Newham youth Parliament (NYP). NYP is an active voice for young people to make a positive change in the community through social action projects.
At first I joined NYP because it was something to do and to get out of the house. I found it difficult to make new friends because I was shy and reserved. Once I become actively involved I began to enjoy myself and it was a great feeling to see a positive change in the community and that I had made an impact on that change.
Throughout the years at NYP I have gained a lot of confidence, made great new friends and I’ve had an enjoyable experience. One opportunity where I developed as a person was when I went to South Africa because I was away from home for a week and it allowed me to look into myself and explore the world my way. Through this, I become a peer educator in sexual health and loveLife, which is a motivational programme developed in South Africa. I also completed my Silver and Gold Youth Achievement.
After eight years of a wonderful experience, I would recommend every young person who would like to see a change in their community and also a chance to develop interpersonal skills to join NYP and make new friends, make a positive difference and to have fun!
